On May 25 during the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board’s last regular public meeting before the summer break, board chairwoman Jennifer Maccarone and other SWLSB officials paid tribute to a member of the Rosemère High School teaching staff who recently received a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
Helped prepare students
At board headquarters in Rosemère, Andrea Venditti, an RHS secondary 4 and 5 science, technology and physics teacher, was congratulated by Maccarone, as well as the SWLSB’s interim director-general Frederic Greschner and board commissioner for Ward 4 Ann McMullon.
The Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence have honored exceptional elementary and secondary school teachers in all disciplines since 1993, with almost 1,500 teachers honored to date. Recipients are honored for their remarkable achievements in education and for their commitment to preparing their students for a digital and innovation-based economy.
Inspires curiosity
Venditti, who has been teaching at RHS for the past 15 years and who is an RHS graduate, is one of only seven teachers in Quebec to have received the distinction. According to a profile of Venditti from the SWLSB, she firmly believes that all students can learn, and it is this belief that drives her to engage students with hands-on learning, inspiring their curiosity and exhorting them not only to ask how things work but also why.
Among her outstanding achievements, according to the profile, she wrote physics workbooks that are now available to teachers across Quebec. She also helped develop a study guide for teachers to prepare students for the secondary four science exam. In addition, she runs after-school tutorials for students struggling to pass the provincial science exam.
Very active teaching
Venditti has also been involved in preparing and validating exams for a wide range of science courses, and she acts as guest teacher at a local elementary school to introduce young learners to higher level science. As well, Venditti has developed workshops to show local Brownies and Girl Guides the wonders of science, while helping them earn badges.
