Circulation of respiratory infections

A call for vigilance from the Laurentians Public Health Department

The Public Health Department of the Laurentians Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) invited the population to redouble caution in the face of the increased circulation of various respiratory infections observed throughout Quebec.

Due to age, chronic illness, or immunosuppression, some people are at risk of developing complications from infection with a respiratory virus, such as influenza, COVID-19, and the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). In addition, infection with pneumococcal bacteria can occur following infection with a respiratory virus. Consequently, public health invites North Shore residents to remain vigilant and take

the right steps to prevent the transmission and spread of respiratory infections in order to protect

the most vulnerable.

In case of respiratory symptoms, follow these recommendations:

If you have a fever, stay home;

If you have a cough, sore throat or stuffy nose, wear a mask.

In busy public places, it is also recommended to wear a mask.

At all times, wash your hands, as frequent washing helps limit the spread of infections.

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others

Dr. Éric Goyer, director of public health for the Laurentians, reminded the population that it is also important to ensure that the recommended vaccinations against an infection are up to date and, if necessary, to get a dose of the vaccine against COVID-19, influenza and pneumococcal disease for those who are at high risk of complications.

“We are monitoring the evolution of respiratory infections very closely. While the entire province

is experiencing the flu season, because of a significant circulation of respiratory viruses which particularly affect young children as well as an increase in COVID-19, we encourage the population to apply protective measures in order to help them preserve their health and that of their loved ones. We would like to remind you that vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself and we  invite the population at risk to be vaccinated according to public health recommendations,” said Dr. Éric Goyer, director of public health for the Laurentians.

The flu vaccine does not protect against COVID-19. For all eligible persons, it is possible to receive the flu, COVID-19 and pneumococcal vaccination during the same vaccination session. There is no time limit between these vaccines. Here is where to get vaccinated in the Laurentians and how to make an appointment:

At the wheel, think about driving!

At the wheel, think about driving!

The Régie intermunicipale de police Thérèse-De Blainville is participating with all of Quebec’s police services and in collaboration with the road controllers of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), in an awareness campaign to educate drivers about the dangers related to distracted driving and intervene with distracted users. Many police operations and awareness-raising activities were carried out as part of Opération nationale concertée Distraction (ONC) 2022, which took place from November 11 to 17.

Deployed under the theme “At the wheel, think about driving”, the ONC Distraction 2022 aimed to remind us that driving is a complex task that requires our full attention. In fact, distraction, whether caused by the use of an electronic device, by wearing headphones, by an object or animal that obstructs or hinders driving, or by external concerns, reduces the attention and concentration of the driver and increases the risk of being involved in a collision. This problematic behavior remains one of the main causes of fatal collisions or the ones resulting serious injuries in Quebec.

During the period covered by this ONC, the police services carried out nearly 1,200 operations and issued approximately 2,500 tickets, including nearly a thousand just for using cell phones. In addition to these interventions, hundreds of prevention pamphlets were distributed during various activities carried out with partners. Many posts on social media have also helped raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.

For its part, the SAAQ conducted an awareness campaign focused on entertainment until December 4. Through this campaign, the SAAQ wishes to make drivers aware that they can all be affected by distracted driving, because its sources are multiple, including cognitive distraction. When our head is elsewhere, we are in our thoughts, preoccupied, or disturbed by anything, our brain must inevitably eliminate information that could prove essential to driving. Thus, when we are distracted, it is difficult, if not impossible, to react so quickly to an unforeseen situation.
