In a significant stride towards sustainable transportation, the Town of Rosemère unveiled the installation of 14 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on July 17, 2023. Made possible through a grant from Hydro-Québec’s Electric Circuit program, this expansion demonstrates Rosemère’s commitment to fostering a greener future and promoting electric mobility. The Electric Circuit program has set its sights on establishing a network of 4,500 EV charging stations throughout Quebec by 2028.

The 14 freshly inaugurated Electric Circuit charging stations, each adorned with the iconic Rosemère logo, are equipped with a total of 20 240-volt chargers. These charging stations are strategically positioned to provide convenient access for EV users at various key locations within the town:

Four stations conveniently located at Town Hall (100 Charbonneau Street)

Two stations featuring four chargers each outside the local arena (155 Charbonneau Street)

Two stations, each hosting four chargers, situated at the Memorial Community Centre (202 Grande-Côte Road)

Two stations with four chargers near the town’s train station (207 Couture Street)

Four stations available at the library parking lot (339 Grande-Côte Road)

Highlighting the importance of these additions, Rosemère Mayor Eric Westram stated, “The addition of these stations provides more charging options to EV drivers in the area, while also promoting a greener mode of transportation. This initiative is one of the key tangible actions we are taking for the environment.”

The Electric Circuit program, offering both 240-volt and 400-volt charging, stands as Canada’s pioneering public network of EV charging stations. Notably, it has earned its place as one of the largest and most reliable networks in North America. EV drivers can effortlessly pinpoint the nearest charging station using the user-friendly Electric Circuit mobile app. To delve deeper into the program and its offerings, residents can visit lecircuitelectrique.com/en.

Rosemère’s commendable endeavor marks a pivotal advancement in the realm of sustainable transportation, serving as a testament to the town’s dedication to embracing environmentally conscious alternatives and contributing to the broader global shift towards cleaner mobility solutions.

Laurentians secure 3rd place in medal tally at Quebec Games

The 57th Quebec Games has come to a thrilling conclusion, and the Laurentides region has left an indelible mark on the sporting landscape. With an outstanding cumulative haul of 48 medals – 19 gold, 10 silver, and 19 bronze – the Laurentides delegation secured a well-deserved third-place finish in the overall standings.

Throughout the competition’s second phase, the Laurentides athletes demonstrated their prowess in a variety of disciplines. They seized the top position in golf and boys’ volleyball, secured a solid second place in synchronized swimming, boys’ soccer, and mountain biking, achieved an admirable fifth place in girls’ baseball, and showed their prowess in girls’ soccer, girls’ volleyball, and sailing, respectively finishing eighth and ninth.

The grand finale unfolded on a nail-biting Saturday, with the boys’ soccer team engaging in a penalty shootout against the formidable Montreal team. The outcome saw the Laurentides clinching the silver medal after a valiant effort, with the match ending 4-2 in favor of Montreal after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Among the girls, the Orange and Black team battled fiercely but ultimately faced a 2-1 defeat against the Lanaudière team, showcasing their relentless determination and competitive spirit.

The synchronized swimming team, particularly in the 15 and under category, earned a spot on the coveted second step of the podium. This achievement was further magnified by the exceptional performance of the duo comprised of Alex-Anne Hurtubise from Blainville and Clara Crevier from Saint-Colomban, who proudly secured fourth place. Notably, the Orange and Black synchronized swimmers proved their dominance by claiming two out of three gold medals at stake in the games held in Rimouski, the Capital of Bas-Saint-Laurent.

In golf, Lucas Cardozo-Baigné from Blainville secured gold in the male juniors’ stroke play event, while Zackary Vincent from Mirabel clinched silver among the bantams. On the girls’ side, Vicky Li from Lorraine secured an admirable fourth place among the juniors. Despite a stroke of bad luck, exemplified by a slip on a wet hill due to rain, 12-year-old Jérômienne Mylee Murillo Beaudoin showcased commendable resilience, ultimately finishing just one stroke away from the podium.

The laurels continued to pour in for the Orange and Black contingent with their triumph in volleyball. The boys’ team emerged victorious, securing the gold medal after a riveting final against Richelieu-Yamaska representatives. The Orange and Black team showcased their prowess in a nail-biting three-set match that ended with a scoreline of 25-20, 22-25, and 15-8. Leading up to the final, the team exhibited their dominance by eliminating the Chaudière-Appalaches teams and the Outaouais team in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively.

On the flip side, the girls’ volleyball team faced a challenging journey, battling their way through fierce competition. Despite a valiant effort, they were defeated by the Estrie team in the quarter-finals. In the consolation semi-final, the girls engaged in a tense three-set match against the Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean representatives, ultimately falling short with a scoreline of 25-12, 18-25, and 16-14.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Laurentides girls’ baseball team suffered a narrow 6-5 defeat in the eighth inning against the Richelieu-Yamaska team during the quarter-finals. Although the provincial tournament concluded with a fifth-place finish, their dedication and resilience shone through every moment of the match.

Above all, these impressive results underscore the pivotal role played by coaches, families, and the entire sports community in bolstering these young athletes. Their unwavering support and encouragement have propelled these boys and girls, all under the age of 18, to deliver their utmost on the playing field. Their accomplishments stand as a testament to their dedication, discipline, and determination – qualities that will undoubtedly inspire generations to come.

52nd annual Canada Day celebration in Deux-Montagnes

Challenging conditions didn’t stop the traditional event from happening

Despite the difficult weather all day on July 1st, this year’s Canada Day celebration at Central Park in Deux-Montagnes was once again a success.

Stormy weather

The organizers made sure to keep the population updated on the weather and the changing schedule on their Facebook page. Right before the start of the event, around 10 am, the storm put the celebrations on hold and everyone was on standby waiting for it to pass. The opening ceremony was pushed back 80 minutes.

Despite the delay, the party was ready to go with activities for both young and old. Inflatables were taken down for insurance reasons, but other games were available to kids, as well as face-painting and mascots. The kitchen was also open for whoever wanted to grab a bite.

Music and fireworks

Music was playing all throughout the day and could even be heard from the next street. Attendants got to listen and sing along to the best of Elton John songs, before Elton Songs took to the stage for a 15-minute performance in the evening.

Fireworks were scheduled to take place right after the performance, at 10 pm. Plenty of pictures were taken, as well as a video put together by the photographer, Paul Goyetche (“2mopaul”), who has been a longtime supporter and sponsor of the event. The video will be out later this month.

Artisan market

The first Canada Day market was also a success thanks to the presence of all the artisans and their creations. The market gave them a chance to showcase their talents and display their local products to the crowd.

Special attendants

Benoit Charette, provincial deputy, was briefly present for the celebrations. He expressed his continuous support for the event, which was greatly appreciated by the organizers and volunteers who braved the weather and worked hard to make it happen.

4Kroners were also in attendance and spent time chatting with the community and making balloon animals at their booth.

Stricter Penalties for Mobile Phone Use While Driving

Stricter Penalties for Mobile Phone Use While Driving

Using a mobile phone while driving has been strictly prohibited since June 1, 2023. Since June 30, 2018, the use of a phone or any other portable electronic device while driving is strictly punished. The fine amount has increased in the past five years and now ranges from $300 to $600, plus costs. As for the number of demerit points per violation, it has also increased from four to five. In case of recurrence, the license can be immediately suspended for a period of 3, 7, or 30 days, and the minimum fine has doubled to $600.

Clearly, from that date onwards, it is difficult to interact with a portable electronic device while driving unless it is connected to the windshield and displays useful driving information.

On this June 1, there are more specific exceptions.

The provisions of the new Driving Regulations, which came into effect on June 1, establish certain exceptions that allow drivers to use a mobile phone or consult information on a screen.

According to the Société québécoise d’information juridique (SOQUIJ), this regulation puts an end to the ambiguity arising from the interpretation by the courts of the provisions of the Highway Safety Code regarding distracted driving, in order to ensure uniform and fair enforcement. Exceptions to the ban include using a mobile phone connected to the windshield for GPS purposes only, as well as using it for transportation company activities or passenger safety. Looking at or touching a mobile phone for purposes other than GPS is prohibited. GPS devices placed on the windshield or dashboard are allowed for navigation.

When a mobile phone is not connected to the windshield or dashboard, it is allowed for emergency calls to 911 and contactless payment, provided the vehicle is immobilized but not parked. Looking at or holding the phone while driving is prohibited.

Using a hands-free device, such as a Bluetooth system or headphones, is allowed for phone calls. However, it is recommended to use voice commands and avoid touching the phone. Holding a phone in hand is strictly prohibited.

Displaying or operating controls on the screen is allowed if it shows information related to driving or the usual equipment. These regulations aim to ensure uniform and fair enforcement of distracted driving laws and prevent ambiguity.
